Jaisalmer is a former ancient trading center and a royal state in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, in the heart of the Thar Desert known as the “Golden City,” its yellow sandstone architecture distinguishes it from others. Overlooking from the skyline, Jaisalmer Fort is a sprawling hilltop citadel buttressed by 99 bastions. Behind its massive walls stand the ornate Maharaja’s Palace and intricately carved Jain temples.
Jaisalmer is one of the most visited places in Rajasthan during the peak tourist season that commences from October and continues till March. It’s most famous spots are the 12th-century fort and ornate “Havelis,” fine merchants-built houses and pavilions in the city’s medieval lanes. The surrounding Desert National Park offers opportunities to observe blackbucks, desert foxes, and chinkaras amid the rolling dunes, rugged crags, and waterholes.
Desert Festival of Jaisalmer is the most awaited and famous cultural and colorful event of Rajasthan. Camel races, Turban-tying, and Mr. Desert like similar competitions are organized every year in February. Jaisalmer has some of India's oldest libraries, containing the rarest of Jain tradition's manuscripts and artifacts. There are many pilgrimage centers around Jaisalmer, such as Lodhruva (Lodarva), Amarsagar, Brahmsar, and Pokharan. With shops selling colorful handicrafts and Havelis that will make you travel back in time, Jaisalmer is an amalgam of exotic Indian desert culture, heritage, and adventure.
